Somewhere in a warehouse in Burbank, there is a foam-latex monster suit gathering dust next to a half-finished animatronic jaw mechanism and the career of a creature effects artist who spent twenty years learning how to make fake skin look real. Meanwhile, on a server farm in New Zealand, a cluster of GPUs is rendering the same generic, slightly-too-smooth digital beast that will anchor the third act of a $200 million blockbuster — and absolutely nobody on the internet will be able to tell you what it looked like six months after release.
This is the trade Hollywood made. And most of us didn't even get a receipt.
The Tactile Terror That Built Geek Culture
Let's be precise about what we're mourning here, because nostalgia can make liars out of all of us. This isn't about claiming that every practical effect was gold. Plenty of rubber-suited monsters were ridiculous. Plenty of animatronic creatures had the expressive range of a damp sock. But the ones that worked? They worked in a way that no amount of polygon count has fully replicated.
The Xenomorph in Alien was a man in a suit, and it moved like something that understood it was being watched. The Thing in Carpenter's 1982 masterpiece was a collection of cables, hydraulics, and Rob Bottin's arguably unhinged dedication to practical grotesquerie — and it remains one of the most genuinely disturbing creatures ever put on film. The T-800's endoskeleton. The chest-burster. Gollum — okay, fine, Gollum was mostly digital, but even then WETA built a physical reference puppet and Andy Serkis wore tracking dots on his actual face, which is still more tangible than whatever Marvel's been doing lately.
The point is that physical effects carry information that digital ones still struggle to transmit. Weight. Resistance. The specific way latex wrinkles under studio lighting. The way a puppet's eye catches a practical light source versus a composited one. Audiences feel these things even when they can't articulate them. Your brain knows the difference between something that existed in three-dimensional space and something that was calculated into existence.

Jurassic Park changed cinema in 1993 by blending Stan Winston's extraordinary practical dinosaur rigs with Spielberg's then-revolutionary CG work. The result was seamless because neither approach was doing all the heavy lifting. Fast forward to the Jurassic World trilogy, and the dinosaurs are almost entirely digital — and they feel like it. The T-Rex in the original had presence. The raptors in the kitchen scene made your palms sweat because the camera treated them like they had mass. In Dominion, dinosaurs the size of school buses somehow feel less threatening than a strongly worded email.
Or take the Predator franchise. The original 1987 film gave us a creature suit so detailed that it still holds up in 4K. The mandibles, the mesh netting, the dreadlock-style appendages — all of it was physically present on set with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and that physical presence created genuine tension. The 2022 Prey was genuinely excellent and brought some of that grounded energy back, but even there the Predator's more elaborate moments slipped into digital territory that slightly diluted the impact.
And then there's the MCU's ongoing war against tangible monster design. The Abomination. The Symbiotes. Whatever they did to Gorr the God Butcher's environment in Thor: Love and Thunder. These are characters with decades of visceral comic book imagery behind them, reduced to assets in a rendering pipeline.
The Economics of the Uncanny Valley
Here's the part where someone in a studio boardroom would like you to believe that digital is simply better — more flexible, easier to adjust in post, cheaper at scale. And they're not entirely wrong about the flexibility. You can change a digital monster's design six weeks before release. You cannot do that with a foam-latex suit that took eight months to build.
But cheaper at scale is doing a lot of work in that sentence. The VFX industry — the actual human beings doing this digital work — is notoriously brutal. Crunch culture, outsourcing, studios demanding revisions at the last minute because a director decided the monster needed to be purple now. The visual effects artists who create these digital creatures are often working under conditions that would make a union carpenter weep, and the results increasingly show the strain. Rushed digital work looks rushed. It looks weightless. It looks like something your eyes slide off of rather than something they snag on.
Practical effects artists, meanwhile, are an endangered species. Schools that once trained monster makers are shuttering programs. Studios that once maintained in-house creature shops have outsourced everything. The institutional knowledge of how to build a convincing physical creature — how to rig a jaw mechanism, how to select the right foam formulation for a specific skin texture — is walking out the door one retirement at a time.
Why the Geek Gut Never Lies
Fans of horror, sci-fi, and fantasy aren't complaining about CGI because they're Luddites or because they're performing nostalgia for clout. They're complaining because they feel the difference, and their feelings are rooted in something real.
The most iconic creature moments in geek culture history are almost universally practical or at least practical-adjacent. The facehugger. Pennywise's original TV-movie iteration. The Pale Man from Pan's Labyrinth — Doug Jones on stilts with prosthetic eyes on his hands, which should not work and absolutely destroys you. Even in recent years, the practical creature work in films like Nope, The Black Phone, and M3GAN generated more sustained cultural conversation than any number of fully digital beasts from franchises with ten times the budget.
There is something about knowing a thing existed — that it stood on a set and reflected light and had to be operated by a human being — that roots it in physical reality in a way that resonates beyond the screen. Horror especially lives in the body. It needs to feel like it could touch you. Pixels, however beautifully rendered, do not touch.
Bring Back the Monsters With Weight
None of this is an argument for banning CGI. The technology, used well and in combination with practical elements, can be extraordinary. Mad Max: Fury Road used digital effects to extend practical stunts rather than replace them, and the result is a film that still feels like it could rearrange your skeleton. The Batman's production design leaned heavily into tangible environments and costuming, and the Riddler felt genuinely threatening in a way that a digitally-enhanced version probably wouldn't.
The argument is simpler than that: stop treating practical effects like a relic and start treating them like a tool you actually want in the kit. Hire the creature shop. Build the suit. Let the actor perform against something real. Trust your audience to respond to tactile filmmaking, because they will — they always have.
Hollywood built its monsters out of foam and cables and someone's fever dream, and those monsters scared generations of kids into becoming lifelong genre fans. The current approach is building monsters out of math, and the genre fans those kids became are noticing.
Pixels don't bleed. And audiences, somewhere in the lizard brain where real fear lives, know the difference.
